Electronic translators, Language, and Online translators
Electronic translators are an incredibly useful tool when travelling in locales where the language is unfamiliar. They also make are an excellent communication device when conversing online with people who speak another language. There are many different types of translators with varying degrees of vocabulary and adaptation. Some are simple phrase books while others can conjugate verbs and provide complete sentences that are grammatically correct.
While the most useful translator is a live person who is well versed in both languages they can be incredibly expensive to travel with considering that all their expenses must be paid on top of their commensuration for providing the service. They can easily and quickly aid in everything from ordering food to bartering at a market and often have a wealth of cultural and geographical knowledge that is not only useful but interesting. If at all possible, this is the way to go.
If a personal translator is too much for the budget then a phrase book or digital translator is the next best option. A phrase book is useful when the owner has a basic understanding of how to pronounce the words written inside. Often there will be a phonetic spelling but this can be just as difficult to comprehend as the real spelling at times. A beginning foreign language class definitely helps but sometimes one must travel at a moments notice. These people need something more than just a phrase book
The simplest electronic translator is very similar to a phrase book, but allows the person to search for specific words and phrases in both languages quickly and easily. They often have a reasonably large dictionary with common words and phrases and are much more compact than the smallest dictionary making them easy to carry. These can also be uploaded with different languages so they can be taken along to any country.
Some of the best digital translators have built in speakers with a pre-recorded voice that can speak the phrase or word so the owner can hear the correct pronunciation or simply turn up the volume and allow the person listening to hear the intended phrase. Unfortunately they cannot translate the reply, but with a good ear most people can find the correct word spoken, and if all else fails, these devices can always go in reverse and speak a foreign phrase in the understood language.
Another option for getting words translated is using an online program that accesses a wealth of information and often has a live translator available when necessary. Free translation programs often forgo this option, and they often make mistakes or word things in an unnatural way for that language but they are still a good tool when internet access is available. These are great for people working from home running an international website or business, but they can also be accessed from web enabled phones and devices. These are some of the best translators, but will not work in every situation.
Of course, the best way to easily travel in foreign lands is to learn the language and the easiest way to do that is to immerse yourself into the land and culture, hopefully with a gorgeous local guide.
